Meridian 59 Flashbacks

Someone has written their fond memories of Meridian 59, my entry into the game design field.

No only was the game online, it was in 3D! Well, kinda. It took the Wolfenstein 3D and Doom approach to graphics, which was essentially to place 2 dimensional graphics on a 3 dimensional plane. Animations were only a couple of frames long and the basic attack looked like someone losing their balance while taking a crap. Needless to say, I was impressed.

The game proceeded like most MMOs do today. Kill things, get loot, level up. In this case, leveling up amounted to getting additional 1 hp. That was it, that was all you got. You started off with 20 hps and could theoretically go up to 100 or more. I use the word theoretically, because there was one thing about this game that really does make it an old school MMO. Every time you died, you lost a hitpoint. Yep, you read that correctly. A death, any death, even to a monster, was the equivalent of losing an entire level. To make matters worse, every last item you were wearing dropped on the ground when you died. So, not only did you lose a level, you also lost all of your best equipment.

I promise that, as a designer, I no longer harbor the lingering hatred towards my player base that I apparently once did.

When All the Ghouls Come Out to Play

Virginia Tech was one of my backup schools. I spent my formulative years in Northern Virginia, and I had many friends who went to college at Tech, and I’ve been watching news reports in the off-chance that one of them might have still been there as a teaching assistant or something. Watching the news reports has been eerie – even though I’ve never been to that campus, the climate and trees in the background reminds me so much of where I went to high school, that I’ve been depressed and distracted all week. I can only imagine how it must affect those who actually were closer to the incident, and my deepest condolences go out to those who were touched by this horrible tragedy.

In the dark days of the Katrina disaster, the only saving grace of the whole episode was that it was the media’s shining moment. The 4th estate came in, managed to capture all the right stories, conveyed the desperation to the people, and captured the outrage over how the entire thing was handled from top to bottom. The Final Ding (Again)

I finally have managed to drag my Undead Priest up to Level 70, it being the first WoW character that I’ve ever maxed out. As an aside, here’s a conversation I had near the end of today’s journey:

Me: Dear God, two of my last quests are actually going to involve picking flowers and killing giant cats.
Wife: In the literary world, this device is called ‘bookends’.

And may I just say: anyone on the WoW design team who thinks that Priests need nerfing should be forced to play one solo for a month. My group fell apart halfway through the last level, and the last bit was like crawling through broken glass — and then being thrown in a shark tank. I can’t imagine what it’s like for someone spec’d to actually heal (note to would-be designers: when no one plays a certain spec below level 70, there’s a problem).

GDC Talk: 2007 (How to Write Great Game Design Documents)

310 people. Not bad for the very last talk of the conference. Surprisingly few were friends of mine humoring me (and where were you guys anyway?) And shockingly few people got up and left halfway through it!

I proposed the talk in desperate hopes of finally getting a GDC speech. After four years of proposing MMO-specific talks, I wanted to do something else — but all I’ve ever designed is MMOs. What could I do a talk on that wasn’t that?

The talk went well, even though the guy handling my AV couldn’t seem to get the bottom half of my powerpoint presentation to show up. For those who wanted to see my slides in all their glory, I’ve put them up here.

Edit: I cleaned up some typos, and made the powerpoint presentation do a better job of speaking for itself (i.e. without me standing in front of it). Those who want to download it and use it may feel free to do so, so long as I remain attributed.

Crashing the Second Life Party

Spent my evening at the Second Life party. I felt vaguely guilty about it. I even went up and shook Wagner James Au’s hand, although I don’t think he fully remembered who I was. This might have been the drinks, though – they were, by all reports, mixed very strongly. I personally have made an oath to not give any speeches or roundtables while hungover. Nothing impedes a roundtable like the guy running it wishing everyone would shut up. Continue reading

The Old Gods Walk Among You

I spent some time tonight exploring World of Warcraft’s new Armory service, which allows you to look at other people’s characters and stats. Rather than post snarky comments about privacy or who did what first, I thought I’d take a more fun journey through the data, and see how many Meridian 59 fanbois I could find.

The names of the Meridian gods are the most famous names I’ve ever made. And they’re pretty original, which is mostly a testament to the fact I was still a young designer, and thought things like dual-vowels and improbable letter combinations were cool (hell, my own character’s name was Zjiria). So i figured it’d be pretty easy to see how many people were still pining for the Streets of Tos. Continue reading

Ding! 60!

Welp, I’ve finally managed to do it, drag my Undead Priest to level 60 in WoW. 10 more levels before I ‘win’. Or alternatively, start playing the ‘real game’.

At level 58, I headed out to the Outlands, where the slightly higher XP drops made the final two levels a cakewalk. Still, I’d like to point out that all of the cool mojo that Blizzard earned from the initial entrance sequence was squandered when I killed a boar as my first monster in the strange new world. A boar with a mutant mohawk is still a boar.

More on this later…

My First Vanguard Impressions

4 frames per second. In character creation.

I gotta give them a whole “it’s not you, it’s me” speech, though. It feels like I bought what was at the time a fairly hotshit Alienware gaming rig just yesterday, but I note that my video card is a 5700 GeForce when the boys at nVidia are up to the 8800s, so maybe it HAS been 3 years since I bought the thing. Looks like I’ll spend President’s Day doing some targetted upgrades.
